Every project I'm about to show you is extremely cheap to make. These are for people who want to stop bleeding money every month, not for the wealthy who never read their bills.

They don't eat your time either. Most take hours, not weekends. I built every one of them around a full-time job and two boys who wanted their father around, so your spare time is enough too.

And it doesn't matter if you're a woman or a man, twenty five or seventy five. It's never too late or too soon to start being more self-sufficient, more prepared, and better with money.

You'll discover how to catch the water that your roof already sheds: one inch of rain on a thousand square feet is about 620 gallons, and most homes send every drop of it down the gutter. A tower of drums catches it, a simple diverter throws away the first dirty rinse off the roof, and because the drums sit up on a stand, gravity pressurizes the water for you.

No pump or power needed, and after one rainy day your garden stops depending on the grids water connection. Connect it to the bucket filter below and you can drink it too.

You can build this filter in less than 30 minutes from stacked buckets, a filter element and a spigot: dirty water goes in the top, clean water comes out the bottom. Rain barrel, pond, creek, it does not care where the water came from. Remember the irony of Katrina: people surrounded by water as far as the eye could see, dying of thirst, because not one drop of it was clean to drink.

Your own wind turbine puts the free wind to work every day. You can build it with an Ametek DC motor or, even better, salvaged motors of a treadmill, an electric bike or scooter motor, even the fan motor of a car.

This is the most powerful survival food you can make at home: dried meat, rendered fat and woodland berries pressed into dense bars, the recipe that carried the fur traders across a continent without a single refrigerator. Half a pound holds close to 2,000 calories, and a batch made right stays good for years, even decades.

With this simple project, you can turn an unused fence into a hidden yet beautiful garden. You can build it using wooden planters or even old discarded pallets. Even people passing by and looking over the fence wouldn’t be able to see it.

The smell of cooking food can carry surprisingly far. Sometimes up to half a mile. In a post-collapse situation, that could be enough to attract every hungry person nearby. And once they know where dinner is being made, there’s no telling who might show up at your door.

The Backyard Power Plant is an independent DIY solar energy system designed to keep a small fridge, TV, and laptop running during a blackout or after an EMP.

And it doesn’t stop there. You can use it to keep the lights on, recharge your phone, power an air conditioner, and keep other essential appliances running when the grid goes down.

What makes this setup especially useful is that, unlike a conventional generator, it doesn’t depend on a constant supply of diesel or propane. A large fuel-powered generator can make enough noise to draw unwanted attention, while running a 20-kilowatt unit can cost roughly $250 in fuel every day, close to $6,000 over a month of continuous use. And if you hook it up to the off-grid shower, you can turn that setup into a fully off-grid hot shower.

You can build this recycled off-grid shower from a damaged IBC that would otherwise be thrown away, or simply use two wooden pallets and a plastic sheet. That means even when the taps stop running, you can still enjoy a proper shower while everyone else is stuck washing themselves with buckets of water.

You bolt a cast iron door and legs onto it, and it becomes a rugged off-grid stove that can warm a few rooms or cook your meals when the power goes out. During snowstorms and winter blackouts that last for days or weeks, wouldn't you prefer to huddle with your family around a cozy, crackling fire instead of shivering and shaking under a blanket, praying for the power company to come and fix things?

Flour, water and salt, baked hard: the bread that fed Christopher Columbus on his maiden voyage and Union soldiers through the entire Civil War. Kept dry, it simply refuses to go bad. Bake one batch, shelve it, and stop thinking about it until the day it matters.

In nearly every major blackout the cell network clogs or dies within hours. You'll discover what you can legally listen to and send without a license, how to get a license without the headache, and how to set up a base station that reaches for miles, powered off-grid. When every phone says no service, the man with a working radio is the man in charge of his own decisions.

In this chapter, Krista will show you how to grow some of the most useful herbal remedies right at home, even if you only have a small garden or a few planters. She’ll also show you when to harvest each plant, how to dry and prepare it properly, and how to store it so your supply can last a year or even longer.

You walk past useful plants every day without seeing them. The entire pump can be built from inexpensive materials costing about $19.50, making it one of those projects that’s hard to justify not having ready.

An inexpensive but durable greenhouse helps you grow more food and protects heat-loving plants when temperatures drop outside. And because the design is scalable, you can start small and expand it as your needs grow.

In normal times, tending a greenhouse can be deeply rewarding. In a serious crisis, having a protected place to keep food growing can become far more important.

If you have moving water on your property, you may already have one of the most reliable sources of off-grid power available. Wind can stop blowing and clouds can cut into solar production, but a steady stream can keep flowing day and night.

I’ll show you how to build a small hydro generator that turns that constant flow of water into a continuous supply of electricity. And if you have enough water flow, the same basic system can be scaled up to provide more power for bigger appliances you rely on.

A smokeless smokehouse in your own backyard gives you a way to preserve meat, cheese, and other foods. As long as there is no visible smoke cloud coming out, you can be sure that no looters or bears will come to steal the goods you have hung inside your smoke barrel.

One of the more useful builds inside Off Grid Survival is a small condensation device that can pull water directly from the moisture already floating in the air. So even if the taps run dry or electric pumps stop working during a blackout, you still have another way to produce water at home.

The system works especially well during warmer, more humid weather. The more moisture there is in the air, the more water vapor the device has available to capture and condense into liquid water.

You'll also learn how to build hooded raised beds that shield your plants from frost, pests, and bad weather. The cover traps more warmth around the plants, helping them grow faster and larger while producing more food from a relatively small area.

They’re especially useful if you don’t have time to tend a huge garden, don’t want to spend hours weeding and bending over plants, but DO want to grow more food with as little space and effort as possible.

This simple build gives you a way to shield vital electronics, including a spare phone, radio, or flashlight, from the damaging effects of a high-altitude EMP.

You get fresh food from far less water than a conventional garden needs, because the same water keeps circulating instead of disappearing into the soil. It can be kept indoors or outside, making it far less dependent on normal growing conditions.

Build it around a larger water barrel and you can add edible fish as well, giving you two sources of food from the same system. Once introduced, the fish provide nutrients for the plants, while the plants help clean the water before it cycles back.

I will show you how to easily prepare the water, safely acclimate the fish, and monitor pH so the entire system stays healthy and productive.
