Quick official CDC short from the Recipe for Preparedness series on building a basic emergency kit
Official resource2 min
Before you trust your kit, check it against the government's own baseline.
This official CDC short from the Recipe for Preparedness series covers the essentials of a basic emergency supply kit, made to show families how to put one together with economy and ease, no big budget needed.
It is their guidance, not ours, and it makes a fast sanity check before you move into the hands-on builds deeper in the vault.
Pack a Winter Emergency Car Kit
Official 2017 public health short on stocking your vehicle with emergency supplies before winter
Official resource2 min
Winter turns a stalled car into a survival situation, and the fix costs one trunk's worth of supplies.
This official short from the same government preparedness series covers the winter emergency car kit: the supplies worth riding in your vehicle before cold weather sets in.
Their guidance, not ours. Check your own trunk against it before the temperature drops.
Washing Clothes Without Electricity
A restored estate sale hand washer demo, plus a simple two bucket wash and rinse routine
8 min
When the grid goes down, laundry still has to happen. This demo resurrects a hand washer roughly a hundred years old and puts it straight back to work.
The restoration is half the lesson: steel wool, tung oil and 93 percent zinc paint for cold galvanizing brought an estate sale relic back to life.
Then the routine: the two bucket method, a little soap in the wash, clean water in the rinse, and a washing action that forces water through the fabric instead of grinding it on a washboard. Gentle on clothes, stingy with water.
When the wash water fouls, the rinse bucket rotates forward. And if you cannot hunt down an original, modern plastic versions are still sold by emergency suppliers.

Building a Survival Food Stockpile on a Budget
A basement walkthrough of cheap canned food storage, rotation habits, and real shelf life
6 min
You do not need freeze dried buckets to eat through a crisis. Canned goods are cheap, everywhere, and already cooked.
This basement walkthrough builds the case: the water weight in every can becomes an asset when clean water runs short, and food that needs no cooking matters when there is no energy left to cook with.
The system is dead simple: new cans to the back, oldest to the front, the year written on every can so you never squint at fine print.
One rule stands above the rest: a bulging can never gets opened. Not even for a taste.
